Boat Insurance - Which One for You?

By John Gibb

You might not have realised it, but boat insurance is the oldest kind of insurance there is. People have been insuring their boats since the 17th century, and over time a number of standards have arisen. The chances are, though, that youre probably much more familiar with car insurance so the good news is that car insurance and boat insurance are actually very similar.

Basically, there are three situations you can be insured against: your boat (or its cargo) being damaged, your boat sinking, and your boat hitting another. Although few countries make it a requirement that your boat must be insured (considering how many boats sail in international waters), you would be very wise to at least buy the third party insurance, in case you hit a boat that is very much more valuable than your own. You will probably find it quite unnecessary to insure your boat against total loss unless it is very valuable it is mainly practical for large ships, and especially for ones carrying valuable cargo.

As with car insurance, policies come with an excess to discourage small claims for boat insurance, this is usually quite a large sum of money, as the intention of the insurance is to cover you against substantial losses instead of just scratches and dents.

There are also a few kinds of insurance you can buy that are unique to boating, although it is unlikely that you will ever find yourself in need of them. If you get Increased Value insurance, your policy will pay out at your boats market value if it is more than the amount you insured it for only useful if you expect your boat to go up in value. Finally, if youre thinking of sailing into a warzone, you might want to get war risk insurance. Of course, you might also want to get your head checked out, if you know what I mean.

Cruising yachts are by the far the most common yacht in private use, making up most of the 25' to 45' (7 m to 14 m) range. These vessels can be quite complex in design, as they need a balance between docile handling qualities, interior space, good light-wind performance and on-board comfort. The huge range of such craft, from dozens of builders worldwide, makes it hard to give a single illustrative description. However, most favour a teardrop-planform hull, with a wide, flat bottom and deep single-fin keel to give good stability. Most are single-masted Bermuda rigged sloops, with a single fore-sail of the jib or Genoa type and a single mainsail. Spinnaker sails,in various sizes, are often supplied for down-wind use. These types are often chosen as family vessels, especially those in the 30- to 40-foot (8 to 12 m) range. Such a vessel will usually have many cabins below deck. Typically there will be three double-berth cabins; a single large saloon with galley, seating and navigation equipment; and a "head" consisting of a toilet and shower-room.

One can and should insure a jet ski prior to use. Insurance may include insuring the craft and insuring one against personal injury. Insuring the craft is easier than insuring for injury, as the jet ski is associated with accidents. If one cannot obtain personal injury insurance, check with ones health insurance plan to be certain that an injury via jet ski is covered by insurance. Some plans do not cover one if engaging in certain activities like bungee jumping, parachuting and the like. Check plan exclusions prior to purchase of a jet ski.

A cruising yacht is often on passage and far away from any assistance so it is important to have some knowledge and good reference material to treat a variety of possible injuries or ailments - and have the necessary medicines and first aid dressings, etc., close to hand. You cannot carry everything but what do YOU have in your medical kit?

Basic Boating Safety Tips

By Lydia Quinn

Millions of boaters and their passengers will go out on the water this summer, whether on lakes, rivers or the ocean. Before you go out, make sure to brush up on safety with these basic boating safety tips.

Preparation

Don't forget to check the weather and take along appropriate clothing and supplies for whatever weather you may encounter. Don't forget to get a copy of the local boating rules, each state and sometimes each county will have specific boating rules and regulations that you must follow. Don't forget to get whatever permits needed should you be fishing, diving or engaging in some other recreational activity. Make sure you have maps and charts on hand for the area you will be boating in, and plan out your course ahead of time. Make sure your engine and other mechanical and electrical equipment is in working order before taking your boat out. Make sure you have proper amounts of oil and fuel for your entire trip. Pack extra if needed. Make sure to brush up on all maritime warning signals and symbols. Double check to make sure you have your boat registration and boat owner's manual as well as any appropriate licenses on board. Make sure you have enough water, food and protection from the sun on your boat for yourself and every passenger. Don't drink and boat, it's virtually the same as drinking and driving and just as dangerous. You should always observe speed limits in every area.

Safety Equipment

Don't forget the most important safety equipment for boating, a life vest for every single member of your party and a working fire extinguisher. Thousands of people drown each year. Few people who drown have a life vest on. Make sure every member of your party wears their life vest when in your boat. Don't forget special life vests for any children and pets who may be joining you. There are specially sized life vests for every size and shape of person and most animals.

Be Observant and Courteous

When out on the water, be observant. Watch out for other boats, jet skis, swimmers, surfers, rowers and anyone else in or around the water. Be considerate and don't take too long at the boat ramp.

Tread Lightly

Avoid boating in environmentally sensitive areas and be considerate of wildlife you encounter. Avoid spilling fuel, trash or other debris in the water. Go very slow in areas of shallow water. Only use designated boat ramps to load and unload your boat. Try to avoid causing large wakes in the water to lessen soil and shore erosion.

Using these basic boating safety tips, you should be able to enjoy your time on the water safely and with less worry.

Hints About sea doo jet boat

A boatyard tends to be used by people who wish to refit or repair their boat whilst it is not on the water. They can also be used in some cases for winter storage if your boat has been on a swinging mooring in the summer. Many boatyards have their own workshops and will carry out repairs on your behalf. Facilities may not be as good as those in a marina, although with a greater provision for residential moorings the standard won't be bad.

Jet Ski is the brand name of personal watercraft (PWC) manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.. The name, however, has become a genericized trademark for any type of personal watercraft. Jet Ski (or JetSki, often shortened to "Ski"[1]) can also specifically refer to versions of PWCs with pivoting handlepoles known as "stand-ups".

If the Jetsons owned a yacht, it would probably look a lot like the Maltese Falcon. The prized possession of Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tom Perkins, the Maltese Falcon is like a sailing computer, equipped with fiber-optic networks, microprocessors and touch screens that have converted the brain and muscle of sailing into a computerized control panel. Now, the only manpower required to hoist and lower its 26,000 square feet of sails is a touch of a button. Likewise, the football-field-sized yacht completed in spring of 2006 is the most expensive and technologically advanced of its kind today. With a price tag hovering around $130 million, the Maltese Falcon navigates more like a video game than a 1,367-ton boat. But Perkins isn't stopping there. He's working on a sports submarine to house on the Maltese Falcon in case he ever wants to play with some whales or manatees deep in the ocean. Think of it as his version of a jet ski.

Personal water crafts present safety concerns in terms of their ability to steer. Since steering is achieved from aiming the nozzle of the pump jet, there is no rudder involved, which means the craft cannot be steered in an emergency breakdown situation. Also, steering is significantly reduced when the throttle is not being applied; this leads to dangerous situations because it is against one's instinct in an emergency to accelerate. However, turning is not effective without doing so. After market products are available to help with this problem, including different types of rudder steering systems such as Cobra Jet Steering. In 2001 Sea-doo added the O.P.A.S. (Off-Power Assisted Steering) system which uses rudders installed on the rear sides of the PWC to assist in steering.
