You are so excited that you have made the decision to join the world of boat owners. You want to buy your very first boat! Are you ready to go to the local marine dealer? Have you been asking questions, doing research about the type of boat you are looking for? There are some things that a first time boat buyer needs to think about before you make the big buy.

Boating is expensive. Are you going to use it enough to make it worth all investment and time that goes into a power boat for example and its upkeep?

Think about the costs of purchasing the boat, license, insurance, interest, fuel, oil, trailer, storage, repairs, use of a two vehicle, weekend trips, more fishing gear, skis, life jackets�Etc. There is a lot more to consider than buying a car.

There is also the time to consider getting everything ready before and after each outing in the boat.

Boat Shows: Going to a Boat Show is a great way to see what types and styles of boats are out there to choose from. It is a great place to collect information and to see the boats up close. You can learn a lot from the salespeople�s own experiences. The salespeople can help you decide what size of boat you want. They should also be able to offer information about winterization, repairs, towing etc.

Boat Type: What type of boat are you looking for? Do you plan to operate it in salt water? Are you hoping to go fishing, ski, and cruise with your boat? The type of boats needs to suit your needs and time.

Big Is Not Always Best: It always is not better to buy the biggest boat your first time. They are harder to handle and look after. For a new boater, it also takes time to learn how to dock. Why not buy a small used boat the first time. There is a lot to learn and you won�t be so upset when you hit the dock a few times.

Asking Price versus Selling Price: When you see a boat that you like, go to another boat dealer to compare prices and value. You can go online to compare boat prices too. That sticker price does not always mean the real price. Some times you can bargain and lower the price too. (Just as in buying a car) Have some fun. Learn to haggle so you can get a decent price.

Buying a new boat is quite the same as buying a new car. But there are far more safety rules to follow with boating. Take your time, do your research and you will find the boat that you want. Happy Boating.

Swinging moorings tend to be the cheapest way of mooring a boat, although some sort of winter storage may need to be considered. Swinging moorings are provided in rivers, estuaries, harbours or in other areas of sheltered water. They consist of a buoy which is attached by chains to a heavy sinker which lies on the river or sea bed. Your boat is attached to the buoy and will then swing around in the water according to the direction of the tide - hence the name. To get to your boat you will need to use a small craft like a dinghy or inflatable tender.A mooring in a tidal area will probably mean that the boat is high and dry for some period of time and it is wise to choose one which will sit down comfortably, probably on bilge keels. If you choose to moor your boat in tidal water then you may come across the terms Mud Berth, Half Tide, and All States Of Tide. A Mud Berth is where the tide will go out and leave your boat sitting in the mud until the tide comes in again, which restricts the times as to when you can use your boat. In this case it would be worth contacting the mooring operator to find out when the best times are for using your boat. Half Tide is when the tide will be in at your mooring for about half the time of the full tide. All States Of Tide means that your boat will be afloat all of the time, moorings in these areas tend to be more expensive than the mud berths as you can use your boat at any time

Traditional sailboats are monohulls, but multi-hull catamarans and trimarans are gaining popularity. Monohull boats generally rely on ballast for stability, and generally are known as displacement hulls. This stabilizing ballast can be on the order of multiple tons of lead, for a 12m (39 Ft.) boat. However, it creates two problems; one, that this gives the monohull a tremendous inertia, making it less maneuverable and reducing its acceleration. In a jetboat, the waterjet draws water from beneath the hull where it passes through a series of impellers and stators - known as stages - which increase the velocity of the waterflow. Most modern jets are single stage while older waterjets may have as many as three stages. The tail section of the waterjet unit extends out through the transom of the hull above the waterline. This jetstream exits the unit through a small nozzle at high velocity to push the boat forward. Steering is accomplished by moving this nozzle to either side, or less commonly, by small gates on either side that direct the jetstream. Because the jet boat relies on the flow of water through the nozzle for control, it is not possible to steer a conventional jet boat without the throttle open.

Water Purification On Boats

I came across this product AQUA SALVEO for water purification. Just wondering has anyone used this product OR any other product to do this job. My boat has been sitting for 4 years now and I suspect the water is maybe older than that. I can't remove the tanks without some major demolition and reconstruction work so is this the best alternative.
