Boat Covers - Your Shield Against Wear And Tear!

By Abhishek Agarwal

As a boat owner, there are many elements to the care and upkeep of your precious sailing vessel you need to consider and a boat cover is one of the important aspects that help protect and shield your boat from the elements of nature, thus investing in a quality grade of the same will ensure the life of your boat for a longer time.

Harsh weather conditions and uncertain or temperate climates can mean the end of your boat's durability and no boat owner would willfully want that for their sailing vessel, especially those owning expensive models.

Thus, buying a good quality boat cover is of prime importance for boat owners looking to raise the life of their boat and minimizing aging its good looks effectively. A good boat cover also helps keep a boat looking new and free from damaging dirt marks made by time and use; so if in the market for purchasing boat covers, do look for quality, design and customized options that meet your boats needs as well as your budget.

There are many types of boat covers available today, ranging from the simple slipcover variety that slide over the top of a boat, covering the essential boat parts (engine mainly) inside so the mechanical parts are rust-proofed for a longer time and vinyl seats stay crack-resistant even in strong sunlight to the more fancy kinds.

This category includes custom made boat covers that are made to order according to the measurements given by the boat owner to ensure a snug fit with no gaps or unsightly sagging spots, thus keep rain, dust and air out of the vital spots of the boat.

Apart from these above categories of boat covers, one can also get to buy temporary boat garages that provide basic stowage facilities, are easy and fast to assemble and can be quickly disassembled too, as when protection is needed (or not needed) for the boat.

The advantage to using this type of flexible boat cover storage facility is that these temp shelters provide longer duration coverage against sudden showers, sleet, snow and excessive sunlight especially during the colder months when the boat may not run daily into the lake. It also does double duty - as garage space as well as adequate cover for the boat.

Often, for a tidy sum, you can make or get assembled the pre-drilled and custom-cut to your given specifications portable boat buildings that serve as boat covers that are both classy and offer secure protection for your boat, while being easy to store too.

Thus, we find the use of boat covers essential for all boat owners that love their boats and want to minimize damages of any kind - to engine, interiors, looks and longevity aspects of their boat as well as being the smart choice for those who are looking for long-term protection cover for their boat.

Jet boats are highly maneuverable, and many can, from full speed, be reversed and brought to a stop within little more than their own length, in a maneuver known as a "crash stop". The well known Hamilton turn or "jet spin" is a high speed manoevre where the boat is turned sharply then the engine throttle is cut causing the boat's stern to lift and spin quickly around with a large spray of water.

Years ago, inflatable boats where the most expensive boats on the market and only a few people could afford them. This was due to the use of exotic materials and the hours of meticulous hand labor which went into their construction. Now, the boats still use the best materials, but in the late seventies, the companies started investing millions of dollars in computer-driven assembly equipment. This enabled prices to be dramatically reduced as economies of scale rose, enabling more and more consumers to enjoy affordable inflatable boating. Zodiac and its sister company, Sevylor, are now the leading low-cost producer thanks to these technological investments. So be wary of inflatable prices substantially below the Zodiac/Sevylor line. They may be either produced in developing countries by unskilled labor, or marketed by companies who are unaware of the importance of profit margins. They will be glad to see your dollar today but may be unwilling or unable to fix a problem later, or supply that much needed spare part.

Marinas are the top of the range as far as moorings are concerned. Moorings in a marina tend to provide deep water throughout the day and therefore a jetty or pontoon is provided so that you can walk to your boat without getting wet. These are known as Pontoon Moorings. They will also provide most of the facilities that you require whilst using your boat. These may include showers and toilets, chandlery, parking, cafe and even a clubhouse. The security provided by a marina will be good and in many cases will include electronic access gates and CCTV camaras.

South African crew wanted for Clipper 07-08

Sun, 29 Apr 2007 14:52:59 +0200
South African crew wanted for Clipper 07-08 to defend national pride! Durban Clipper will be competing again in the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race when it sets off from Liverpool, UK, on 16 September this year. This will be the second time Durban Clipper has taken part in the race – having finished on the podium in a very creditable second place in Clipper 05-06. With the exception of the skippers, none of the crews are professional sailors and many of those taking part have never sailed before beginning their comprehensive race training. It is not too late for people from South Africa to sign up to take part in this 35,000-mile ocean race. Durban Clipper was narrowly beaten to second place on her first outing by westernaustralia.com Clipper, so there is a great deal of Southern Hemisphere pride to play for!
